Frequently asked questions
How do I open an article in Sunny Reader?
Click the Sunny Reader icon in your Chrome toolbar on any article page.
Where are my notes, highlights, and library saved?
On your computer, in Chrome's local storage and IndexedDB for the extension. Nothing is uploaded. You can export everything as a single JSON file from the Options page or the library.
Does Sunny Reader sync across devices?
No. Because the extension has no account and no server, there is no sync. You can manually export and import your library and settings as JSON to move between machines.
Reader view didn't open—what happened?
A few pages can't be parsed: browser-internal pages (chrome://, the Web Store), PDF viewers, and some paywalled sites that load the article as JavaScript. If a page you expect to work is being skipped, email us the URL and we'll investigate.
How do I switch themes?
Open the reader, then click the palette icon in the toolbar. There are ten themes, each with a light and dark variant. You can also turn on "Match OS" to follow your system's light/dark preference automatically.
Can I export my library?
Yes. On the library page, click Export to download a JSON file containing every saved article, note, and highlight. You can also import that file later or move it to another machine.
Why does Sunny Reader need these permissions?
Each permission is there to support a specific feature, and the extension never collects or transmits data. See the Privacy Policy for a plain-English breakdown of each permission.
Is Sunny Reader open source?
Yes. It's licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and the extension ships as readable source—nothing is minified. See the Credits page for the full list of bundled third-party libraries.
How do I report a bug?
Send an email to hello@sunnyreader.com with the URL of the page, the Sunny Reader version (bottom of the Options page), your Chrome version, and a brief description of what you expected versus what happened. A screenshot helps.
How do I uninstall?
Right-click the Sunny Reader icon in your toolbar and choose Remove from Chrome…—or visit chrome://extensions and click Remove. Uninstalling deletes every piece of data the extension ever stored locally.
Still stuck?
